As a parent, it is very tempting for me to provide step-by-step instructions to my children whenever they are working on something. Although the intention is good, this could restrict their developments to think outside the box. Kids could learn in a lot more fun way through their observation, exploration, and imagination.
Even though I encourage less rigid rules, we still need to make sure they are playing safely. Below are some products which I found would be helpful in developing their creative thinking. Once again, I used several criteria when evaluating the products.  I would only consider the products if:

  • There are at least 30 customer feedback
  • At least 80% of positive feedback
  • The average star rating is more than 4 out of 5
  • There had not been any safety concern that I can locate

Sand Play

Sand Table for Toddlers

Playing in the sand is undoubtedly one of the activities that can promote the creative development of a child. The Step 2 Naturally Playful sand table (Affiliate link) could be worth considering. Its height is suitable for most toddlers.

One thing I always require is that there must be a cover for the sand. Else, debris could get into it, while wild animals would use it as a litter box. This sandbox has an elastic tie-downs lid which keeps sand clean and dry. I also think the race track design on the cover is very cool.

At the time I’m writing this post, there are 746 Customer Reviews on Amazon, of which 89% are positive. Manufacturer recommended age is 24 months and up.

Best Choice Products Cedar Sandbox

If you want a bigger sand playset where multiple children can play together, you could consider getting a sandbox rather than a sand table. However, I still cannot locate a sandbox that could fit all my criteria requirements. Below is the closest one I could find.

There are several things I like about this sandbox. First, it has a beautiful wooden design. I could envision this could be an excellent match to my backyard, as it has a similar color to my deck.

I also like the two bench seats. They would make it a lot easier for my back to play with my daughters. The built-in cover is thoughtful design. It would protect the sand from animals in using it as a litter box.

Basically, I love the fact that everything is already built-in. The fewer distinct pieces, the neater it is. Best Choice Products Cedar Sandbox received:

  • 57 Customer Reviews on Amazon
  • 77% positive comments
  • Manufacturer recommended age is 3 to 8

Although it does not entirely fit into all our criteria, (remember I’m looking for over 80% positive comment) I look forward to them to improve their rating as they continue growing their customer base and enhance their products design.

Sandtastik 25.-LB-BOX-REG Play Sand

We talked about the sand table and sandbox, but the core material we need should be the sand itself. Sandtastik play sand received high compliments from a tremendous number of customers.

When I read the customer reviews, some parents suggested the sand is silica free and asbestos free, so they feel safe to have their child to play with it. Some love the white sand as it is very fine and beautiful, and even use it for sand tray therapy.

On the other hand, some critics that the sand is too fine, too powdery like texture. You could consider adding some water while playing. Of course, always make sure your child does not inhale the sand and do not rib them into their eyes or mouth.

Out of the 372 customer reviews on Amazon, 83% are positive comments. The manufacturer suggests it’s good for early childhood classrooms or daycare

CoolSand Kinetic Play Sand

If you prefer your child to get less messy when playing sand, then you could consider the Kinetic play sand. This product comes with choices of 2 lbs or 5 lbs of sand, a refill bucket with an inflatable sandbox. It also has different color options, blue, green, purple, pink, red, and orange.

I tried once at a friends’ house did not stick on my hands or clothes. They just hold to itself. They are squeezable, and the texture is somewhat similar to Play-Doh, but not as hard. I personally still prefer the traditional sand, as I love the feeling that the sand drip in between my fingers. However, this could be a good alternative if you do not wish to get involved with too much cleaning work afterward.
